Captions puts captions on a clip you already have. What the clip says is heard and set out as lines you can fix, then the captions are burned into the picture in the look you pick. The clip you started from stays as it was.

Caption a clip

  1. Add the clip. Press Clip in the bar to upload an MP4 or MOV, or to choose one of your own videos, made here or uploaded. You can also drop a file on the page. A clip can run up to 5 minutes, and an upload can be up to 200 MB.
  2. Wait while it's heard. The page says it's listening, and the lines appear beside the clip, with the language they were heard in.
  3. Fix the words. Click a line to change its words; a word you fix keeps its timing. While a line is open you can type its start and end. × takes a line out, Add line adds one where the clip is, and Undo takes back your last change. Press a line's time to play just that line.
  4. Pick the look in the bar: Style, Size and place, and Shadow. The clip shows the captions as they'll be burned in. Pause it to drag the words up or down.
  5. Press Apply captions. The price is in the bar before you press. The captioned clip appears in My captions when it's done, and in your Library.

The look

  • Style: eight styles, each shown with two of your own words: Word Pop, Impact Slam, Clean Subtitle, Editorial, Luxury Serif, Glass Tech, Marker Energy and Retro Collage.
  • Lit word: the colour of the word being said: the style's own, yellow, lime, cyan, pink or orange. Clean Subtitle lights no word, and Luxury Serif keeps its gold.
  • Size: S, M (the style's own size), L or XL, or anywhere between on the slider.
  • Place: Top, Middle, Bottom or Lowest, or drag the words on the paused clip. Top, Middle and Bottom keep to the part of the frame a platform leaves clear: on a tall clip, above the buttons and captions TikTok, Reels and Shorts lay over the bottom. Lowest puts the words at the very bottom, below that, for when you want them there anyway; the page says when the words are in that strip, as the app you post to may cover them.
  • Shadow under the words: Default, None, Light, Medium or Strong.

What it costs

Captions cost 10 credits for each minute of clip, counting a part of a minute as a whole one. A 40-second clip costs 10 credits; a 2½-minute clip costs three times that. Hearing the clip and fixing its lines cost nothing: the charge comes when you press Apply captions. If a clip can't be captioned, the credits go back.

When there are no lines

If the clip has no sound, or nothing in it could be heard, the list says so. Play the clip to where a line starts, press Add line and type what's said. The same goes when listening is paused on our side: the clip is measured but not heard, and you type the lines.

Captioning again

Edit again on a captioned clip in My captions opens its lines and look, to change them and apply once more. Each Apply is charged on its own.

A connected AI app, such as Claude or ChatGPT, can caption a clip for you too. It shows you the lines it heard and the price first. See What an AI app can do in your account.
